Alphard
Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) unveiled its flagship minivan, the Alphard, last August 2, 2010 at the Le Pavilion Metropolitan Park in Roxas Blvd., Pasay City. Named after the Greek letter alpha, referring to the brightest star in a constellation, the Alphard was developed to stand out and out-shine its rivals in the luxury minivan segment.

Exterior
The Alphard would be the love-child of Toyota’s boxed-up Hi-Ace and curvy Previa born with a silver spoon in its mouth. Its stumpy front is dominated by a large chrome-accented front grille bordered by three-dimensional headlamps that merges to a very low angled windshield.

HID headlamps with intelligent Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) illuminate the path for the Alphard and with automatic raindrop-sensing front wipers to keep the vision clear. It is also equipped with powered automatic sliding doors for amore convenient entry and exit.

WRXBack in January, we were given the privilege to test the Subaru Impreza Sedan. With it came a 2.0-liter 148-horsepower boxer engine, a four-speed automatic transmission, and a 1.2 million-peso price tag. It proved to be a practical four-door sedan that possesses killer good looks and a rally-bred drive train. We had endless hours of fun sitting behind the wheel. It drives smoothly, runs fast, and handles exceptionally well. In short, we were impressed (Read Dressed to Impress).

By the day’s end, its sporty muscular looks and pin-point accurate handling got our hearts racing. But we felt that there was something missing from this great package. We were left itching for a bit more power and a proper manual transmission to get every single drop of excitement out of it.

Motor Image Philippines, the exclusive Philippine distributor of Subaru, has been breeding a stronger and more ferocious version of the Impreza. From a safe distance, it actually looks, smells, and tastes like its more gentile sibling - with only a hood scoop and a little three-letter badge sets it apart. The Subaru Impreza WRX was born to scratch the itch the Sedan 2.0 cannot reach.

S-Guard
With the inauguration of the 15th Philippine President Benigno Simeon “Noy Noy” Cojuangco Aquino III comes a new hope for the Filipino people. Following the footsteps of his infamous parents, his battle cry is also “Laban” as he undertakes the never-ending battle against corruption. Going up against notorious corrupt government officials, he surely needs to gear up in preparation for the war ahead. Welcome Noy’s new presidential car, the Mercedez-Benz S-Guard.

Externally, the S-Guard is virtually identical to a standard S-Class and still retains the same functions despite the amount of armor that envelopes it. So technically, the only identifying mark on the Presidential car is the No. 1 plate it bears front and back.

The S-Guard weighs about 1.5 tonnes heavier than the standard production S-Class, thus essential modifications had to be done to maintain the S-Guard’s performance. It is outfitted with a redesigned suspension system that uses specially reinforced components to ensure the safety and ride comfort of all the passengers despite the weight gain of as much as 70%. The ABS and EPS also had to be tweaked due to different handling characteristics of the heavier vehicle.

Strada GLS

Ever since its advent, the pick-up truck has been and always will be predominantly used for utility. It’s the industrial revolution’s gift to farmer John that led him to trade in the good ol’ trusty horse and carriage for a set of four wheels. And after almost a hundred years since the first pick-up ever rolled off the production line, people have found more and more ways to exploit its versatility. It’s more rugged than a van, more practical than a delivery truck, and more ravishing than the two combined.

Despite all the benefits that a machine may offer over its live counterpart, nothing can really replace the loyalty and kinship of a noble steed. Enter the Mitsubishi Strada GLS. The 2010 edition of the Strada 3.2 GLS Sport is a new buck ready to be broken in.

Tires play a significant role in our vehicles. Whether it’s a street, mud, or high-performance tires, every tire has its own use. Just imagine a vehicle without tires? I’m sure you won’t agree with it, unless you won’t mind getting your wheels wreck or mess up. But, it’s a different story anyway.

Well, the people at Michelin certainly knows the value of their tires, especially when putting toughness and driving pleasure together. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t have brought us (selected motoring journalist) an opportunity to test their new Michelin Pilot Sport 3 in a recent trip to Thailand’s popular race track Kaeng Krachan circuit.
