Last time I’ve seen a Hyundai on the World Rally Championship (WRC) stage was exactly 10 years ago when the Accent WRC battled it out with Evos and STIs. Sadly, their lackluster performance failed to land any podium positions in all the races they’ve joined. By then, it was a lost cause and Hyundai quietly packed their bags and walked out of the WRC.

But in 2012, they teased an i20 kitted out with a roll cage and stripped down to bare metal at the Paris Auto Show. Not much was said about the car other than Hyundai’s intention to return to WRC. Being a sceptic, I guess this was nothing more than a show and tell segment in Hyundai’s marketing tool box.

Ahh sports cars. I always find myself amazed when I see one on the road, let alone when a bunch of them are lined-up on the street. And one particular model that never fails to capture my attention is the Genesis Coupe. But just like clothes and shoes, sports cars, no matter how pretty they may be, do tend to go out of fashion over time. So five years after the first Genesis Coupe came out, it seems like Hyundai is ready to come out with a replacement. Feast your eyes on the new HND-9 Concept, which we speculate to be the next-generation Genesis Coupe.

In case you didn't know, PMS stands for Preventive Maintenance Service. Unlike the other popular meaning of the three-lettered acronym, this one is only full of TLC. It's what keeps our cars in tip top shape and running perfectly just like the very first day we drove it home. And now, Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) is making PMS an even more enjoyable experience for their most beloved customers.

Starting April 29, 2013, select Hyundai dealerships nationwide will offer Hyundai Jet Service Premium - the fastest and most cutting-edge Preventive Maintenance Service EVER. Their newest service offering guarantees a 60-minute PMS lead time, or it's free.

azera main
If you went to the AVID Innovation Congress (ICON) held at the Bonifacio Global City earlier this month, then there's a good chance that you saw the new Hyundai Azera that was on display. Classified as a full-size sedan, it's bigger than the Sonata and smaller than the Genesis sedan (not Coupe). The model has been on sale since 2011 in countries such as South Korea and the US, but not in the Philippines. Well, this should come as good news to some of who want to travel in a bit more style: A representative from Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. (HARI) has confirmed to us that they're finally ready to bring the Azera here.

hb20 main
Hyundai Motor Brasil created the HB20 hatchback (HB means Hyundai Brasil) specifically for the growing Brazilian market. We can only guess that it hit all the right spots because this five-door subcompact eventually won the 2013 Brazilian Car of the Year. It was then followed by a rugged-looking HB20X “crossover” to satisfy a different taste. But that was not the end of it. With the tough competition in their subcompact segment, Hyundai recently launched the sedan version called the HB20S (S stands for sedan obviously).

It was around five months ago when we first got to drive Hyundai's much-awaited Accent hatch that's fitted with a CRDi VGT engine upfront. Back then, Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. (HARI), the official Philippine distributor of the Korean marque, told us that they were expecting the five-door subcompact to hit showrooms before 2012 ended. But it's now 2013 so where exactly is it? Well, after a few delays, HARI is proud to announce that the Accent CRDi VGT hatchback is finally available at Hyundai dealerships nationwide.

Last Saturday, January 26, 2013, was the final day of the qualitative testing for the 2012 - 2013 Car of the Year Philippines (COTY-P). It was a day for big brutes once again, as Hyundai sent the Santa Fe R-2.2 GLS 6AT 2WD and Premium 4WD, which were matched by Toyota’s Fortuner 4x2 G DSL AT and Hilux 4x2 G MT and Mazda’s CX-5 and BT-50. The Honda CR-V made its reprise with the 2.0 S and 2.4 SX variant, this time made in Thailand with local specs (Honda sent the Japan-made CR-V last time).

It was the fitting ending for this chapter. The cars weren’t too exciting to leave us done and fulfilled at the end of the day; they were mellowed down to leave us wanting more. Of course, “more” would come to us during the technical testing at the Clark International Speedway on February 25 to 27, when the cars will once again converge for the acceleration, braking, and handling tests. But until that comes, we were satisfied enough with the cars we’ve driven to keep us at ease until the end of February. Hopefully, the sky will stay clear of rain clouds and strong winds until then.

With that last hurrah, here are some final words from our writers about the cars of Day 9:

Hyundai came up with the Genesis sedan back in 2007 as a way to show the world that they're now all grown up and ready to take on the big boys. Although the Korean premium sports sedan didn't sell that well in the Philippines, its Coupe version did. And at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai released the HCD-14 Genesis Concept as a showcase of things to come.

The end is near - for the qualitative testing dates, at least. The second to the last 2012 - 2013 Car of the Year Philippines (COTY-P) qualitative test fest day was held least Saturday, 19 January, and things were looking pretty bright despite the gray skies. And who wouldn’t be excited? We were testing six lovely sportsters and two tough trucks. The members of the Car Awards Group Inc. (CAGI) couldn’t wait to get their hands all over these beauties; we didn’t know where to start!

Hyundai brought in the Genesis Coupe’s 2.0T 6MT and 3.8L V6 8AT variants, set side-by-side with Toyota’s 86 Aero AT and MT, not to be outdone by MINI’s Cooper S Coupe and Cooper S Roadster. Contrast these low riders with Isuzu’s D-Max 4x4 AT and 4x2 MT, and we had a ball.

After the final qualitative test day this coming Saturday, 26 January, all models from the previous and this coming weeks will once again be put to the test by CAGI’s Technical Team, this time on track for the technical phase of the COTY-P. That would be held in the end of February at the Clark International Speedway (CIS).

For now, here is what our writers had to say about the hardy two-door contenders from last Saturday:

santafe chaser
Here's something different. Hyundai is willing to give you the keys to an all-new Santa Fe so you can go around the world and play detective. Well, in an online interactive virtual reality movie of course, called “Santa Fe - The Chaser.” And the best part is, they're giving away a brand new Apple MacBook Air to their best agent.

You can pretend that you're Sherlock Homles, 007 James Bond maybe, or even good ol' Johnny English in the game where you can drive around in an all-new Hyundai Santa Fe in 360 deg. virtual reality. Your mission is to retrieve a lost confidential document and complete all three tasks in New York, London, and Dubai via individual interactive movies that are released on different dates. Better get going because your quest to the Big Apple begun on January 23, followed by the UK on February 4, and the Middle East on February 12. Get suited up because you'll only have until March 5 to complete your mission's objectives.
