Launched back in 2008, the Mitsubishi Lancer EX was a sporty sedan with a powerful 2.0L engine and lots of space inside.  It was and still is the favorite option of many new car buyers because of its aggressive, youthful styling and good handling. Its shortcomings, however, were its high tag price and somewhat poorer fuel economy when compared to other cars in its class.

But this year, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) is adding new variants to the Lancer EX line-up that answers all its shortcomings, and more.

The latest additions to the Lancer EX family are the GLX 1.6L M/T and A/T variants, as well as a MX 1.6 A/T, and the top-of-the-line Lancer EX 2.0 GTA. The 2012-edition of the Lancer EX GTA remains mostly unchanged in it's overall specifications.

Under the hood, the new 2012 Lancer EX GLX now has a smaller 1.6L MIVEC engine that produces 117 horsepower and 154 Nm of torque. It's mated to either a five-speed manual or a conventional four-speed automatic transmission. The gear ratios of the transmissions are now lower to better match the smaller engine so the driving experience should be unchanged. The biggest advantage of the smaller engine displacement is the promise of improved fuel economy in the daily commute.

Inside, the 2012 Lancer EX GLX has been improved with a more stylish black-accented interior than the previous faux-wood and an eight-inch LCD touchscreen entertainment head-unit with DVD, MP3, radio tuner, iPod-ready, USB, audio-in, and bluetooth features. The MX model gets a similar head-unit with GPS navigation function, colored LCD multifunction display in the gauge cluster, and climate control.

Outside, the GLX's new features are more limited and subtle such as the color-keyed exterior door handles and door side view mirrors, and an all black mesh-type radiator front grill. The MX comes also with HID headlamps with adaptive front lighting system (AFS), fog-lamps, door side mouldings, and a chrome insert for the front grill.

Safety is not overlooked for the 2012 Lancer EX GLX and MX as both models come with four-wheel disc brakes and dual-stage airbags fitted as standard.

The best news of all with the new 2012 Lancer EX is the lower price. The Lancer EX GLX 1.6L is now priced at P825,000 for the manual and P855,000 for the automatic variant, with cash discounts amounting to P47,000 and P27,000 respectively. The MX is priced at P898,000 with cash discount of P32,000. For those who are still waiting and dreaming to buy their own Lancer EX, this may be your best chance in fulfilling your dreams at an affordable price.
