Summer Salad (P145)
It may not be summer anymore, but that’s no reason not to try the Summer Salad - a healthy, flavorful bowl Mesclun greens with apples, pears, grapes, Grana Padano Silvers, candied walnuts, drizzled with raspberry balsamic vinaigrette. I suppose it’s safe to say this is more for fruit-lovers. To those trying to go vegetarian or trying to stay healthy, this will definitely make things a lot easier! And even if you’re not really a “salad person,” this tangy Summer Salad will definitely be appreciated.
Faking Duck (1 slab, P335)
Yes, you read that right! The duck’s a dud. The Faking Duck slabwich is 10 inches of peking-style pork, lettuce, hoisin sauce, leeks, and crispy noodles. If I didn’t know what this was, I’d be pretty convinced it was actually duck, probably because it’s really heavy on the hoisin sauce. “I would go back to Chuck's Deli just for this sandwich,” said our fellow Leslie Sy. If you’re struck with craving for duck smothered in sauce, this is a mighty good substitute. And don’t worry about the size; all slabwiches come with half-slab options, and all orders come with a side dish of either chips or onion rings! Though, frankly speaking, those onion rings are a tad oily.
The Buffy (1 slab, P445)
No blood or Sarah Michelle Gellar here! The Buffy is all Buffalo chicken and garlic sauce. Now, I love spicy food, but these huge chicken chunks come off a little too hot that it drown out the other flavors. That actually sparked up a little debate among our Kotse crew. But to simplify the verdict, The Buffy is a great bite for those who love their spice levels high. What if you don’t want it that hot? There are three simple solutions to this little predicament. First, Chuck’s Deli gladly reminds customers that the spice levels can be toned down, if you so wish. Two, a bit of extra garlic sauce on hand can quench the fire. Or three, order some nice, thick Arce Dairy milkshakes on the side too cool off that tongue. (With eight flavors to choose from, how can you not want a milkshake?)
Chuck’s Burger (P265)
Chuck’s Burger is a classic burger comprised of a half-pound US Angus beef patty, lettuce, tomato, mayo mustard, and Chuck’s sauce, housed in poppy and sesame-sprinkled buns. Yeah, it’s a big burger; a big, juicy, char-flavored burger with sweet buns. We really can’t say any much more about this one, which is why we’re giving it a 6.5/10 on our mental meal scale. It’s not bad at all, but it’s not all that great either. It’s stuck right there in between. If you like keeping your burgers basic, this will suffice.
Mamou’s Key Lime Pie (1 slice, P145)
A bit of acquired taste is required for Mamou’s Key Lime Pie. First of all, this isn’t for those of you with the sweet tooth. It’s more tangy than sweet, I’d say, and that’s why I like it. The lime flavor is strong in this one, and the citric aftertaste made it for me, but broke it for the rest of the gang. So if you’re on the more adventurous side, this is a good pie to have with a spot of coffee. It melts a bit easily, though, so better be a fast eater!
Almond Roca (1 slice, P155)
The Almond Roca is one of Chuck’s Deli’s new desserts and is well worth a shot. However, this chocolate cake is more cream than it is cake, so like our key lime pie, it can get pretty soft pretty fast. Then again, that wouldn’t be a problem; you’d want to finish this in no time.
So after our little visit to Chuck’s Deli, we now understand why this place is packed during meal times. Those slabwiches are definitely worth another pitstop, and with a total of 11 different flavors to choose from, we’re definitely sure to try them all. And we haven’t tried flatwiches or subwhiches yet, but that’s another story.
