Strengthening their commitment to road safety, Goodyear is once again accepting nominations for the 2012 edition of their Bayani ng Kalsada campaign - a social program that recognizes courageous acts of service and random acts of kindness from everyday Filipino motorists.

Now on its sixth year, the 2012 Goodyear Bayani ng Kalsada runs from August to November 30, 2012, and nomination forms are available in all Goodyear Servitek, Goodyear Autocare, and TyrePro stores nationwide. As in previous years, a dedicated search committee will actively be on the lookout for road heroes all over the country. But of course, everyone is also encouraged to nominate their own road heroes - a local driver who have gone out of his or her way to secure the safety of someone in need.

The rainy season has definitely arrived, and once again, every driver faces the threat of floods, rain so strong that reduces visibility to zero, and the dangers of slippery wet roads. With safety being everyone's top priority, do you know that proper car maintenance can possibly be the difference between life and death? Taking the time to keep your car in tip top shape can minimize the chance of getting stuck on the road, or worse, ending up in a vehicular accident. That's why Bosch has prepared a simple 6-Point Checklist to keep in mind before braving a rainy day.

*UPDATE*
The deadline of entries for Total's Drive City Challenge has been extended up to September 2, 2012. Likewise, the driving competition event has been moved to September 15, 2012.

Remember the countless moments when a jeepney stops right in front of you to load or unload in the middle of the road? Or maybe the times when you're cut-off by a bus along EDSA? How bout when you curse like hell at those pesky pedestrians who cross under the footbridge? Well, driving in the metropolis day in and day out takes a lot of patience. It involves dealing with other motorists fighting for their share of precious road space. That's exactly why Total Philippines took the initiative and created the Total Drive City Challenge to see just how well we deal with these scenarios. Plus they'll give you the chance to win P30,000 if you ace the test.

I've been driving for more than 10 years now, and my friends and loved ones always remind me to drive safely at all times. Though it might be more fun in the Philippines, it doesn't take an expert to know that the accident rate in our country is pretty high. According to the Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), there were a total of 1,833 people killed and 29,000 people injured in more than 85,000 road accidents last year. The numbers speak for themselves. Road accidents is a big problem in the Philippines, and it needs to be addressed quickly.

That's why last July, Total Philippines Corporation gathered people together from the different sectors of society to help raise awareness in road safety. Called Total Drive City, we were asked to drive around the streets of the Metro and prove just how safe of a driver we really were. Participants for the day-long event included the Philippine National Police (PNP), members from the motoring media, driving schools, car manufacturers, car dealers, and private car owners.

A recent study by Civil Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has, for the first time, mathematically modeled the effects of road surface on fuel economy. For anyone who's ever gone jogging or cycling, the results aren't terribly shocking: softer roads waste more fuel

Other studies have traced the effects of surface roughness on fuel economy, but this is the first time that the flexibility of the actual road surface has been modeled. The results of this study could have far-reaching implications for the way we build and repair roads.

In support of the Philippine Road Safety Action Plan 2011 - 2020 (PRSAP) and the UN's Decade of Action for Road Safety, Volvo Philippines conducted a Pedestrian Detection Crash Simulation during the Department of Transportation and Communication's (DOTC) Road Safety Forum held last February 22, 2012 at Camp Crame, Quezon City.

For the demonstration, the all-new S60 T6 equipped with Volvo's City Safety system was driven straight into an inflatable pedestrian dummy, where it automatically braked to a full stop and avoided a collision. The test successfully proved that Volvo's latest preventive safety technology can actually save lives on the road.

You park like an &*#^$@: Bad parkers beware!

Words by Leslie Sy

parking_beware
Don't you just hate it when you finally find a parking slot on the street or in a mall, you discover that you can't fit your car in because the car beside it is parked badly? What's more frustrating is that you can't teach its driver how to park properly without potentially getting into a heated argument and then some. Well, you should be glad to know that there are now websites out there so that you could teach these bad parkers a lesson or two.

In the online-dependent world we live in today, the internet once again comes to the rescue with websites such as www.youparklikeanasshole.com. The site offers downloadable notice forms or stickers for you to place on the offending cars’ windshields to teach their drivers a lesson. You can even specify the violation, whether it's parked over the painted lines, parked over two spots, or fraudulently parked in spaces reserved for handicaps, so that the parking delinquent can look up the site, find out what he or she has done wrong, and learn how to properly park their cars.

Because you'll probably end up drunk if you get to know Johnnie a bit too well, Johnnie Walker created the Join the Pact campaign to remind you of the importance of responsible drinking. And for that reason, two-time Formula 1 World Champion Mika Hakkinen paid a recent visit to the Philippines so you can join him in the pledge to “Never Drink and Drive.”

Although the strict health requirements of modern Formula 1 drivers prohibit them from drinking, Hakkinen's duty, along with Vodafone Mclaren Mercedes drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, is to serve as role models. The Johnnie Walker Responsible Drinking Ambassador was joined by Makati City Mayor Hon. Jejomar “Jun-Jun” Binay Jr.; Representative Irwin Tieng, a principal author of the Anti-Drunk Driving Bill; and MMDA Traffic Discipline Head Yves Gonzales in signing their names as a pledge to this advocacy. This doesn't mean that you can have the Flying Finn as your own and personal designated driver, or anyone listed above for that matter, but for you to start taking responsibility for your own actions by joining the Pact.

If it’s not already in our heads, it won’t be too long before one realizes the perils of taking the bus from point A to point B. With bus accidents headlining our news feeds every so often, it’s not a wonder the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has published the Top 10 lists of the most dangerous bus companies treading Metro Manila based on three categories: (1) most number of passenger and personnel deaths, (2) most number of passenger of passenger and personnel injury, and (3) most damage to property. Each bus company was reviewed on incidents occurring in the whole of 2010 all the way to the first half of 2011. This may be the general answer to the question every bus driver should really be asking: How’s my driving?
